We all want to save energy, whether it be to save money or to help reduce greenhouse gases, or both! Below are simple tips you can follow to become more energy efficient. Remember every little bit helps.

Appliances
Appliances with a high star energy rating are more efficient to use overall and will save you money. For further information check out www.energyrating.gov.au
Turn off unused appliances at the wall rather than leaving them on standby. Believe it or not, they still consume energy on stand by. This will help take dollars off your energy account.
If weather persists, try to air dry clothes rather than using a clothes dryer.
Set your freezer at 18°C and the fridge between 2°C and 5°C. They are the most efficient settings for keeping your food fresh, cool and crisp.
Using the microwave for cooking is more efficient than using the oven.
Use smaller appliances if possible. For example, use a toaster rather than using the oven/grill if you can. Cooking time is usually a whole lot faster too.
Make sure your gas appliances are checked regularly for any faults and leakages.
Automatic timers or motion detectors on lights can help reduce energy used for lighting.
A water temperature of around 55°C is usually suitable for most home applications (this temperature may not be suitable for young children). You may wish to adjust the thermostat on your hot water service to achieve this.
Try to use cold water as often as possible, especially when doing small tasks.
Try not to use the dishwasher until it’s completely full. Even then only use the economy cycle whenever possible.
Use natural sunlight for heat as much as possible.
In the cooler months try and close off any areas where heat may escape. Look at your curtains, doors, fireplaces and any draft areas. In warmer months, do the opposite and try to let the breeze come through your household.
Gas heaters and natural gas water heaters are generally cheaper to run and use lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to your average electric heater. If you have the choice, go for gas.
